About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
Windsor city officials are calling on the federal government to help with the rising costs of flooding mitigation projects in Windsor's east end. Windsor mayor Drew Dilkens, Ward 6 Coun. Jo-Anne Gignac and Windsor West MP Brian Masse want the federal government to invest money in the city's Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF) for city sewers and water projects as part of Windsor's flooding and sewer master plan.
Fort McMurray is more prepared for a flood than ever before, says a top official with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. All work on permanent flood mitigation is expected to be completed by 2023, Matthew Hough, the municipality's deputy chief administrative officer, told council Tuesday. "We are a more resilient community," Hough said, adding that he was struck by how much was accomplished this year.
Dickson Dam, located approximately 180 kilometres northwest of Drumheller on the Red Deer River, plays a key role in the ongoing flood mitigation efforts in the Drumheller Valley through flow regulation and communication with municipal operators. Director of North Central Region of Alberta Environment and Parks, Water Infrastructure, and Operations Branch Rick Friedl was one of the operators involved at Dickson Dam during the 2005 flood event and took time to speak with the Mail to explain the purpose of the dam and its role in the 2005 and 2013 flood events.
As the upgrade of Glenmore Dam draws to a close, NCEexplores how the Canadian structure has evolved to help reduce flood risk, while increasing its water supply capacity. Canada’s Glenmore Reservoir has become an important landmark in the city of Calgary, providing clean water, flood mitigation and a recreational setting for locals. The 3.8km2 reservoir is formed by a concrete dam, which has been the focus of a C$81M (£46M) improvement project. Approximately 320m long, Glenmore Dam is located on the Elbow River in south west Calgary. The structure was originally built in 1933 to supply drinking water and enable the city to cater for future population growth.
The Okanagan Basin Water Board has approved more than $318,000 in funding to 17 projects that will help conserve and protect water in the valley while addressing the larger issues of climate change. Directors approved the Water Conservation and Quality Improvement grants at their last board meeting, April 2. Recipients have now been notified. In total, there were 31 applications with a total ask of $688,281.
