This week, Eby named his first cabinet as premier, with former energy and mines minister Bruce Ralston taking on forestry and Nathan Cullen replacing Josie Osborne as the minister for water, land and resource stewardship. The new ministry was put in place in February. The tone of the letters appears to usher in the type of science-based, holistic approach to conservation and biodiversity in the province that people like Wu have been asking for from the B.C. government. "We have seen the impacts of short-term thinking on the British Columbia land base — exhausted forests, poisoned water, and contaminated sites," wrote Eby is his mandate letter to Cullen.
Fort McMurray flood mitigation scheduled to be complete by 2023
Fort McMurray is more prepared for a flood than ever before, says a top official with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. All work on permanent flood mitigation is expected to be completed by 2023, Matthew Hough, the municipality's deputy chief administrative officer, told council Tuesday. "We are a more resilient community," Hough said, adding that he was struck by how much was accomplished this year.
Theodore TOO stopping in Oshawa
Theodore TOO, Canada’s famous and beloved tugboat, is set to make a stop at the Oshawa Port on its way from Halifax to his new home in the Port of Hamilton. Theodore will be making several port stops along his journey as part of his Great Lakes tour. He is set to dock in Oshawa on July 15, however ports and dates are subject to change and are pending weather and water levels.
‘Water is life’ teaches new Syilx children’s book series
A new children’s book series by a Syilx and Nlaka’pamux author is teaching kids about the importance of water as a living entity and how to protect it. “It was significant and important for me to write this series because water is life. I wanted to create awareness of water practices and policies, to ensure that it’s protected,” says author Harron Hall. The four-book series, titled Follow the Water, will launch on Feb. 5, and marks Harron’s publishing debut.
