Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
Pine Point, N.W.T., could have a fully operational lead and zinc mine within the next five years — nearly four decades after the old mine closed down and the nearby community was abandoned. In 2022, Pine Point Mining Limited received its Type A water licence, allowing it to withdraw water to be used for mineral exploration drilling, camp use, dust suppression and testing, among other things.
Some homes and roads in Little Buffalo River, near Fort Resolution, N.W.T., were flooded Thursday, but by Thursday evening flood waters were already receding. The settlement of Little Buffalo River shares it's name with a nearby river. Todd Francis, the senior administrative officer with Fort Resolution, estimates at least a dozen homes may have been affected, though an official assessment of the damage is still needed.
