Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.

CANADA Iroquois water project funding is approved

Paying for a $2.25 million waterline rehabilitation project along Carman Road in Iroquois just got a bit easier for local water and sewer users. South Dundas officials learned April 14 that the application for more than two-thirds funding under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program was approved. The application is one of 144 water infrastructure projects approved during this funding window. The federal government is paying $896,201 and the Ontario government is paying $746,759 towards the project. South Dundas will pay the balance of the project, $597,542.

The community of Saltair is receiving approximately $3.9 million in senior government funding to complete a water filtration project required to meet provincial drinking water guidelines. The funding comes from the federal and provincial government’s joint Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s Green Infrastructure Stream, and represents approximately 70 per cent of the total estimated $5 million cost of the water filtration project.

Rural communities near Prince Albert want to turn the taps on a $45 million water project. The Town of Shellbrook and the RM of Shellbrook have struck a steering committee with the Prince Albert Rural Water Utility (PARWU), spending $60,000 on studying a new water treatment plant with connecting pipelines to the communities, according to its terms of reference. “I really believe that building a water treatment plant will open the door to other communities to get good water,” noted Brent Miller, who is the steering committee chair and a Town of Shellbrook councillor.
