Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.

The water plant in Gametì, N.W.T., is down until at least Tuesday afternoon when a technician is scheduled to come and fix it. Chief Doreen Arrowmaker said the residents of the community of about 280 have been advised to conserve water until at least then. According to Arrowmaker, the community's senior administrative officer posted on the community's Facebook page that staff completed all mandated checks with the relevant guidance from water plant inspectors but the problem wasn't solved. "In the meantime, please save your water as there will be no regular/call-out water deliveries until late tomorrow afternoon/evening," the post reads.

To keep the plumber from your doorstep, Roberts strongly advises people to disconnect hoses from their outside taps and make sure the outside taps are shut off. Hoses should also be disconnected from frost-free outdoor faucets, he said. Isolation valves for backyard piping or irrigation should be shut off inside the house. The B.C. plumbing code says a water main should be 18 inches underground in our climate, said Roberts, but in some cases in older homes, or if someone ran their own irrigation line underground, it may be shallower and could freeze.
