Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
Minor coastal flooding is possible this weekend due to elevated ocean water levels on B.C.’s South Coast. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the region early Saturday morning. “(A) low barometric pressure will combine with a period of high astronomical tide to produce elevated water levels (Saturday) and Sunday,” Environment Canada staff said in the statement.
A Flood Watch has been issued for Niagara's Lake Erie shoreline. With Environment Canada issuing a special weather statement, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority says the strong winds in tomorrow's forecast will increase water levels and waves along the Lake Erie shoreline in Port Colborne and Fort Erie. The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry predicts that Lake Erie water levels will rise by more than four feet above current levels tomorrow.
Heavy rain is expected on Prince Edward Island overnight Wednesday. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement in connection with the forecast. Rainfall amounts will vary across the province. Generally amounts will be 30 to 50 millimetres, but could be as high as 70 in some areas. "Periods of rain will become heavy this evening and continue overnight before easing early Thursday morning. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible tonight," said CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland.
