Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday reannounced the new Canada Water Agency, which will protect the country's freshwater supply and be headquartered in Winnipeg. "This province is home to over 100,000 lakes and rivers, with water flowing in from the Rockies and the [United] States, all the way out to Hudson Bay," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday, overlooking the convergence point of two of those rivers — the Assiniboine and Red — at The Forks in Winnipeg.
Despite pledge to end drinking water advisories, these 2 Manitoba First Nations still live under them
It was a time of celebration and relief in Shoal Lake 40 First Nation on Wednesday morning, as the community that borders southeastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario marked the opening of a new water treatment facility and the end of nearly 24 years without clean running water. But more than 30 other First Nations are still fighting for access to clean drinking water that most Canadians take for granted, including two in northern Manitoba that have been under long-term drinking water advisories for years.
How a group of students led Brescia to ban plastic water bottle sales and become a Blue Community
It was a simple conversation that sparked a student community to dig deeper and do more for the environment. Clara Prentice, a second year student at Brescia University College, recalls her extensive discussion with Canadian Environmentalist and school chancellor Maude Barlow last year. Through stories about Barlow's experience as the United Nation's first senior adviser on water issues, Prentice was convinced she and her fellow classmates could do more for the environment, because while they are generations apart, the group of women share the same desire to at least leave this earth as they found it, if better isn't possible.
Clean water for First Nations critical during the COVID-19 pandemic: Activists
Activists in northeastern Ontario fighting for safe, clean water in First Nations communities across Canada are getting tired of broken promises. After five years and millions in spending, the Liberal government announced in early December that it would not fulfill its commitment to end all long-term water advisories on reserves by March 2021. Although some progress has been made – 97 advisories have been lifted since November 2015 – there’s still a long way to go. There are 59 active long-term water advisories in 41 communities across the country, and activists maintain that clean water should be a priority for the federal government, especially during a global pandemic. “Water is a basic human right, and nobody should have to beg for it. This is wrong, and it’s come to the point where I think it comes down to racism,” said Autumn Peltier, a teenage water-rights activist from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island.
