Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
Debby Rideout had her whole future ahead of her. In August 1987, Rideout had just gotten married, and was already hatching plans to open her own hair salon. Just two days after her wedding, which crammed a hundred revellers into a nearby Lions Club hall, she moved from her hometown of Twillingate to picturesque Moreton’s Harbour, into a cozy wood-panelled home she built from the ground up with her husband, Chris.
Volunteers and scientists are in the midst of a six-day "bio blitz" in Vancouver's False Creek, collecting water samples as an initial step toward cleaning up the inlet between Science World and English Bay. The project, running until Wednesday, is a collaboration between local non-profit False Creek Friends, scientists from the Hakai Institute coastal research centre, and the City of Vancouver.
