Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
With the global push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, many communities across Southern Alberta are already leading the way in implementing innovative and equitable climate solutions. The new Mobilizing Alberta Climate Action Grant program out of the University of Calgary’s Office of Sustainability aims to help strengthen capacity for advancing climate action across Southern Alberta.
A federal grant may help the Municipality of West Nipissing complete a secondary water main loop in Sturgeon Falls. The money would also allow a second feed from the water treatment plant. Funding is available from the green stream of the Investing Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), which is offering up “to five million dollars” from a $240 million pot to applicable projects, explained municipal engineer Alan Korell. The grant is “only for drinking water” systems, he said.
