Chemical spraying to kill invasive bass is back on for Miramichi watershed

After opponents stopped the project last year, chemical spraying to wipe out an invasive bass population in Miramichi Lake is set to take place later this summer. Last year's attempt to eradicate smallmouth bass was halted because Wolastoqey grandmothers and mothers concerned about the environmental impact of the spray took to the lake in canoes. It is unsafe to spray rotenone, the fish-killing pesticide being used, when people are on the water.

Ruby St. Amand, a resident of Inuvik, N.W.T., said she's never seen the water this high. St. Amand has lived at her camp about 10 kilometers northwest of Inuvik since 1995. While she said they have managed flooding in the past, they've always been left with land above water. "This year, [we were] housebound," she told Loren McGinnis, host of CBC Radio's The Trailbreaker. "We have a little 12-foot boat tied up right to our steps."

'The 500-year flood': Dozens forced from homes in Whitewater Region

Dozens of people in the Township of Whitewater Region have been forced from their homes as water levels on the Ottawa River peaked this weekend. The Renfrew County, Ont., township is about 140 kilometres northwest of downtown Ottawa, and includes nearly 90 kilometres of shoreline. About 100 homes have been affected by flooding, Mayor Michael Moore said Sunday.
