Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.

In a typical geothermal project, water pumped up for conversion into a heat or energy source is then pumped back down for re-heating. Company president Alison Thompson said the joint development agreement with Shell will “de-risk” the project to determine the potential for more investment. “The drilling to be done … with Shell’s funding assistance is to intersect the M’Deek Reservoir with production sized wells. If the well tests look good, the wells could be used to produce geothermal energy,” she said. “The wells drilled previously were not intended to be used for production.”

Kortright Hills students video on reusable water wins national energy competition

Kortright Hills Public School is among five schools across Canada to win a video challenge that promotes energy conservation. The team Water Rockers from Kortright participated in the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge, a joint initiative supported by Canadian Geographic and Shell Canada that saw over 550 classrooms participate in 17 challenges related to energy conservation for prizes totalling $45,000. Wearing masks and holding up signs, Kortright students were seen sharing the environmental, financial and health benefits of using a reusable water bottle in their video which received 25,531 votes and won $1,500.
