My ninth grade class recently learned about water pollution and how many communities across Canada are using polluted water sources for their drinking water. In our community, there is one major water source that is definitely polluted. The South Saskatchewan River is a beautiful river but just walk by the Mendel Art gallery and you will see all the garbage in the river.
It is not fair or just to pollute water sources. We are extremely lucky to have good drinking water but other communities suffer from the pollution we put into the water. Polluting the South Saskatchewan River has to stop! As consumers of water, we have the right and obligation to insist upon the compliance with Health Canada’s Drinking Water Guidelines and Wastewater Discharge Guidelines. Further more we should be petitioning the federal government to make the guidelines regulations that are enforceable.
Do your part in reversing the trend of polluted water by becoming educated about the environmental and health effects of polluted water. Besides, the next time you take a sip of water who knows what type of pollution may be in it?
Sincerely,
The Concerned Student
