Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
A scuba diver cleaning part of the sea floor in a Vancouver inlet came across an animal that an expert says is a long way from home. The unusual find has been identified as a horseshoe crab, native to the Atlantic Ocean along the North American coastline. “This is not a species that’s indigenous to our water here, but as soon as I saw it, I knew what it was,” diver Henry Wang said in an interview.
Waste Management of Canada Corp. and a local septic pumping service have been convicted and fined for failing to report an intentional landfill leachate spill at the closed Richmond Landfill site in Napanee. On Jan. 14, 2020, the waste management company directed a driver with Sutcliffe Septic Services Ltd. to dump a truckload of approximately 13,000 litres of leachate fluid into a wooded area at the site, after the driver was concerned the vehicle would become stuck in a field on its way to the landfill’s temporary leachate storage lagoon.
