The municipality of North Norfolk has declared a state of emergency after it was pounded by rain overnight Monday into Tuesday, causing flooding in the community of Austin. The municipality said in a Tuesday morning news release the local state of emergency was being declared after what it called an "unprecedented" amount of rain fell Tuesday morning. Austin was hit especially hard, said Theresa Bergen, chief administrative officer for the North Norfolk municipality, which is between Brandon and Winnipeg.
'It's pretty shocking,' resident says of return to Antigonish trailer park hit by flooding
Some residents of an Antigonish, N.S., trailer park returned to their homes Wednesday to check out the damage caused by severe flooding the day before. "It's pretty shocking to come back here," said Joni Mansfield, a resident of the MacDonald Trailer Park, also known as Indian Gardens Trailer Park, off Maclellan Street. Thirty-three people escaped by boat when the park flooded on Tuesday.
Could take 'days or weeks' to fix flood-damaged parts of Cape Breton
It could be "days or weeks" before things get back to normal in flood-ravaged parts of Cape Breton following the rain and wind storm that swept across Nova Scotia, according to a provincial transportation official. Jamie Chisholm, the Department of Transportation's eastern district director, said Wednesday the hardest hit areas were Inverness and Victoria counties. "We've had multiple bridges compromised, some washed out completely, several roads that are impassable right now," he said.
Antigonish residents told to stay home after heavy rain causes flooding
Residents of Antigonish, N.S., are being warned to stay home after heavy rains have caused flooding and washed out roads. Main Street is flooded and closed between Court and St. Andrew's streets. Chisholm Park and Columbus Field are also closed due to rising water, as well as the Creighton Lane parking lot. The closures remained in effect Tuesday night. Town spokesperson Kate Gorman said around 8 p.m. that while water levels had receded, they were expected to increase later because of the incoming tide.
