Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.

Four UCalgary faculty named Canada Research Chairs

The Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCP) named four University of Calgary faculty members to its ranks on June 2, in recognition of their achievements and pursuit of research excellence. UCalgary is now home to 67 active Canada Research Chairs (CRCs). Three additional scholars have also had their CRCs renewed. “I’m pleased to see seven distinguished UCalgary scholars named Canada Research Chairs today,” says Dr. William Ghali, vice-president (research). “They all have ambitious research goals that will address society’s most pressing challenges. They will shape the future of their fields both through their research and their commitment to training the next generation.”

Water competition and conflict was the topic the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs dove into during its online session Thursday. Heading up the discussion was Dr. Dena McMartin, an environmental and agricultural engineer, faculty member and vice-president (research) at the University of Lethbridge, discussing the challenges, constraints and competing interests that are making water management increasingly difficult and important for southern Alberta.
