Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
This investment will enable improvements to the water and sewer networks that will increase drinking water quality and allow for better management of wastewater and stormwater in Baker-Brook and Heron Bay. Additional work to close the loop on the water network will be undertaken in the Honoré-Roy area in Saint-Léonard, which will increase water pressure and quality.
At first, Rebecca Labillois thought it was just another routine storm roaring across the Bay of Chaleur. "But then the power went out," she says."The water just kept on flooding in, and it flooded all the way up here and up to my house." It was Dec. 6, 2010, and massive waves of water were engulfing the homes along Beach Road and Olympic Drive at Ugpi'ganjig First Nation, also known as Eel River Bar, in northern New Brunswick.
