Britain is enacting the early stages of drought plans which involve using water carefully to protect supplies, the government said on Tuesday, following record-breaking temperatures. There are so far no plans for curbs on water use but regulators and water companies are working to manage water levels, including by operating water transfer schemes to allow rivers to be artificially maintained, the Environment Agency (EA) said.
Province expects to operate Red River Floodway before end of the week
The province says it is preparing to activate the Red River Floodway to manage water levels within Winnipeg in the next 24 to 48 hours due to rising water levels that have been accelerated by this week's weather. The Red River's spring crest isn't expected in Winnipeg until sometime from April 9-16. However, the precipitation Manitoba has seen in the last two days, along with the gradual snowmelt occurring in the river basins, could raise levels above the riverbanks at some spots in the Red River Valley, the province said in a news release Wednesday.
New IJC report seeks tools to maintain safe Lake Ontario water levels
A new report has been released by the International Joint Commission (IJC) for public review as part of the ongoing debate over Plan 2014, a controversial regulation plan to manage water levels on Lake Ontario. The phase-one report, the first of two to be released later, makes six recommendations on the road to helping better prepare for crisis high-water levels along Lake Ontario shorelines that wreaked havoc in 2017, 2019 and in early 2020.
