A landfill contaminated this couple's water and forced them to sell their home of 43 years

Now the Haughians say they're living a "nightmare" where the landfill has contaminated the water, forcing them to sell the home to the township. Mayor Arie Hoogenboom said the couple might have to leave once the sale is complete because it is a "liability" to the township if they stay and puts their health and safety at risk. The Haughians argue they're fine where they are, citing a filtration system and bottled water provided by the township. If they have to leave, they at least want to have a say on when.

'The right thing to do': Shelburne looking to officially decommission landfill that's been the subject of environmental racism claims

Latest sampling around CFD Mountainview shows PFAS and benzene remain

The Department of National Defence continues to investigate the discovery of harmful chemicals in the area of CFD Mountainview in Prince Edward County. The DND has been working since spring of 2021 to address the issue after per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) and benzene were discovered near the landfill at the detachment. The PFAS on the property are thought to mostly be related to the past use of firefighting foams for training while the benzene may be the result of past fuel use storage practices.

Nunavut companies to ship plastic water bottles to Southern Canada for recycling

A group of companies in Nunavut has teamed up to help recycle thousands of plastic water bottles that have been shipped to Iqaluit during the capital city’s water crisis. Iqaluit’s tap water hasn’t been drinkable for a week after it was found to contain fuel. As a result, shipments of bottled water were sent to the city of about 8,000 people and distributed to residents for free. But with no recycling facility, piles of plastic bottles are bound to end up in Iqaluit’s landfill.

What really happens to plastic drink bottles you toss in your recycling bin

What really happens to plastic drink bottles you toss in your recycling bin

The infinite triangular loop of arrows that we know as the recycling symbol adorns millions of plastic pop and water bottles we carefully sort in the blue bin. It comforts us with the idea that each one will be recycled over and over again forever. But unfortunately, most of the time, it's a lie. Many bottles aren't recycled at all, and those that do get recycled usually aren't turned into other bottles or recycled again after that.

Canadians worried about proposed Coventry landfill expansion

Those concerns have grown since testing revealed elevated levels of PFAS chemicals, including PFOA, in the groundwater near an unlined, closed portion of the landfill. Those chemicals are used in industrial applications. Conservation Law Foundation is asking Vermont to delay the permit application process until that testing is complete.
