The company behind a massive, multibillion-dollar green energy plan is asking Newfoundland and Labrador's top court to stop protestors from blocking access to its work sites on the Port au Port Peninsula. Lawyers for World Energy GH2 were in Supreme Court in Corner Brook on Thursday afternoon for a hastily called hearing. A group of protesters has been blocking an access road to one of World Energy's sites, on Newfoundland's west coast, for weeks.
Alaska Native tribe requests hearing over wastewater permit for large exploration project
The Chilkat Indian Village of Klukwan is requesting the state of Alaska launch an adjudicatory hearing over a wastewater permit for a large exploration project. The Vancouver-owned Palmer project is located roughly 56 kilometres northwest of Haines. Constantine Metal Resources wants to search for a mix of copper, silver, gold and zinc in an area measuring roughly 33,000 hectares. The Tlingit take serious issue with the project.
Judge bars pesticide spraying in Miramichi Lake until hearing
A judge has barred a group from spraying a chemical in the Miramichi Lake area until a lawsuit filed by local cottage owners can be heard. Spraying of rotenone, a pesticide and piscicide, was scheduled Wednesday to eradicate invasive smallmouth bass, according to court documents. On Tuesday, Justice Terrence Morrison made an order preventing any spraying until the lawsuit objecting to it is heard on Aug. 17.
