Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.

Residents say they're frustrated with the slow progress of the cleanup of two Etobicoke creeks nearly a month after runoff from a massive industrial fire polluted them and caused devastation to wildlife. Ontario's Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks says it is continuing to assess the environmental impact after a six-alarm fire on Aug. 11 at Brenntag Canada, a chemical distribution company that operates an industrial building in north Etobicoke, caused runoff to enter both Mimico Creek and Humber Creek.

Environment ministry alerted after reports of oil spill in Rideau River

The province's environment ministry was alerted after firefighters responded to reports of a petroleum spill Sunday evening in the Rideau River. Ottawa Fire Services received a call at approximately 7 p.m. from a passerby who reported what they believed to be petroleum under the Adàwe Crossing connecting Overbrook and Sandy Hill. Firefighters went to the area to investigate and saw some material in the water. Crews were unable to determine what the floating material was or the source of the potential spill, the fire department said, but reported it to the Ministry of the Environment.
