Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.

In 2021, Federal Court approved a class-action settlement between Canada and several First Nations that were subject to long-term drinking water advisories from 1995 to 2021. Now, settlement negotiators have extended the deadline for First Nations to submit a claim until March 7. If the Band Council Acceptance Resolution that a First Nation files with the settlement administrator is accepted, it will receive a $500,000 base payment and be eligible for additional payments of up to 50% of the amounts paid to eligible individuals in the community.

A veteran is urging the federal government to extend the deadline to apply for compensation for military personnel who drank contaminated water coming from a Canadian forces base. "They got caught. Now they're playing sore loser," said Ed Sweeney, a former corporal who once served at CFB Valcartier, a military base north of Quebec City. In 2020, the Quebec Court of Appeal awarded millions of dollars in compensation to some residents of Shannon, Que. Among those eligible were some current and former military personnel and their families who lived nearby at CFB Valcartier's married quarters between 1995 and 2000.
