Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
Regional district staff detailed 2023 Chapman water system scenarios based on repeats of 2021 or 2022 weather conditions at an April 6 committee meeting. Both revealed Church Road well supply, to be added when Stage 2 restrictions come into force, should allow the time at Stage 3 restrictions (if called) to be extended, with less time at Stage 4 (if needed).
Kimberley residents are reminded that as of June 1, stage 1 water restrictions are in place. Watering on odd and even days has been in place for quite some time in Kimberley. In 2016, after a particularly dry, hot summer, the city tweaked the water restrictions bylaw further, setting out four stages of restrictions that will kick in as needed. Beginning this week, watering must be done between the hours of 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. AND 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Residents of properties with odd-numbered addresses will water only on odd-numbered days and residents of properties with even-numbered addresses will water only on even-numbered days.
