Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
More than 2.5in of rain was reported in one hour in Brooklyn Navy Yard. In a virtual briefing, New York's chief climate officer Rohit Aggarwala said that the city's sewage system was only designed to handle 1.75 inches an hour. "It's no surprise that parts of Brooklyn have borne the brunt of this," he said.
Media representatives are advised that Terry Duguid, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, will lead the Canadian delegation to the United Nations 2023 Water Conference. The conference will take place March 22–24, 2023, in New York City, New York. Parliamentary Secretary Duguid will deliver Canada's national statement during the plenary session and will also participate in various side events, including an event on Indigenous-led conservation for the health of water ecosystems in Canada, and the world.
