The real cost of renting a hot water tank

The real cost of renting a hot water tank

What they don’t tell you is that hot water tanks are mechanically very simple, require little to no maintenance and last an average of 16 years. By installing a far more fuel efficient electric heat pump water heater, they estimated we could reduce our overall home energy consumption by 11 gigajoules per year, which translates into over 3 megawatts and potentially, hundreds of dollars annually in energy savings. However much to my horror, on further inspection I discovered that unbeknownst to my wife and I, that in order to get out of our current hot water tank rental with Enercare (which we inherited from the previous owners), we would be legally obligated to first purchase our current seven year old tank at a cost of over $1,100.

Nuclear power plant leaked 1.5M litres of radioactive water in Minnesota

Officials in Minnesota are monitoring the cleanup of a massive spill of radioactive water from a nuclear power plant just outside Minneapolis. About 1.5 million litres (400,000 gallons) of nuclear wastewater leaked from the plant back in late November, but the incident wasn’t made public until Thursday. Xcel Energy, the company that operates the affected nuclear power plant, promises that the spill poses no risk to public safety, as did the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

Class action lawsuit certified against NRC for polluting well water

Class action lawsuit certified against NRC for polluting well water

An Ottawa judge has certified a class-action lawsuit launched by a group of Mississippi Mills homeowners who say a local fire research lab polluted their drinking water and devalued their homes. The sprawling laboratory is owned by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). The homeowners contend the NRC, though its negligence, released firefighting chemicals into the environment from the lab, contaminated their land and damaged the value of their properties.

‘Incredibly destructive’: Canada’s Prairies to see devastating impact of climate change

As the climate continues to warm at an alarming rate, experts warn if dramatic steps to mitigate global warming are not taken, the effects in Canada’s Prairie region will be devastating to the country’s agriculture sector. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the country is warming, on average, about double the global rate. Scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. recently found 2020 was earth’s second-hottest year on record, with the average land and ocean surface temperature across the globe at 0.98 of a degree C above the 20th-century average. However, the agency found the northern hemisphere saw its hottest year on record, at 1.28 degrees C above the average.

Health Canada knew about contaminated water for 2 years before Mississippi Mills residents informed

Many government agencies knew about the suspicious well water in Ramsay Meadows, a small subdivision halfway between Almonte and Carleton Place. But none of those agencies told the residents. The 49 homes stand across the street from the National Research Council’s national fire lab, which does research on firefighting. In late 2013, the lab bosses learned that their firefighting chemicals had contaminated their property’s groundwater, probably in the late 1900s.
