Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.

Community in favour of hosting federal Canada Water Agency

A task force working to submit a bid to be the host city for a proposed federal government clean water agency has published its community discussions on its website. The project website can be found at www.cwassm.ca. Ten in-person and virtual discussions held between August and December have resulted in more than 200 participants representing local organizations, Indigenous persons, youth and the general public, providing information and discussion the city’s plan to host the future agency. The idea was first sparked by Ward 5 Coun. Corey Gardi, who presented the idea to city council.

Sault vying to host Canada's water agency

The push is on to bring a yet-to-be formed Canada Water Agency to Sault Ste Marie. The agency was first identified during the Liberal government's previous mandate. City councillor Corey Gardi and Mayor Christian Provenzano are spearheading the effort. "Coun. Gardi and I have been working to lobby the federal government to locate that new agency here in Sault Ste Marie," said Provenzano. "We think there are a lot of natural qualities of the community that make it amenable to that type of agency and we think it would be a great fit."
