Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.

Heat wave puts water restrictions on tap for Okanagan community

High temperatures putting a stress on the water system have prompted restrictions in Spallumcheen. Hand watering only is in effect, as of 1 p.m. July 28, 2022, for all residents of the Highland Park, Silver Star, Stardel, Round Prairie, Hankey, Pleasant Valley, Lansdowne and Larkin local area services. The stage two restrictions means no sprinlers or irrigation systems can be used to water lawns, gardens, trees or shrubs. Washing of driveways, sidewalks, parking lots and exterior building surfaces is also not permitted.

A notice was dropped in mailboxes and shared online for residents of Lansdowne recently about elevated sodium levels in the drinking water. The notice from the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit stated that the medical officer of health had instructed them to inform residents of the test results. A sample taken on Jan. 13 revealed the sodium at 58.4 mg/l, and a repeat sample taken on Jan. 18 has shown a sodium level of 70.8 mg/l. Any level of sodium above 20 milligrams per litre must be reported to the medical officer of health, stated the notice.
