Canada Nickel Company Inc. has announced it will submit its Crawford Nickel Project north of Timmins, Ont. to the federal Impact Assessment permitting process. The decision follows the acceptance by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada of the company’s Initial Project Description of the project, stated a release. The Crawford project is expected to be among the top five largest nickel sulphide operations in the world, supplying nickel to manufacturers of stainless steel and electric vehicle batteries. The process would involve open pit mining at a site 42 kilometres north of Timmins in the Timmins-Cochrane Mining Camp of northeastern Ontario.
Springbank reservoir project secures up to $165.5M in federal funding
The Springbank off-stream reservoir to protect Calgary from flooding will receive up to $168.5 million in federal funding, moving it a step closer closer to becoming a reality. Federal Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson made the announcement in Calgary on Tuesday, and after he approved the project earlier this month in light of a report issued by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada. It concluded the Elbow River reservoir is unlikely to cause significant adverse environmental effects with mitigation measures in place.

Following a thorough and rigorous environmental assessment, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada's (the Agency's) Environmental Assessment Report concluded that the Laurentia Project: Port of Quebec Deep-Water Wharf – Beauport Sector was likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects to fish and fish habitat, air quality and human health, socio-economic conditions, and the current use of lands and resources for traditional purposed by Indigenous peoples.
