Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
To facilitate work on the new Glace Bay water storage tanks project, a water main shutdown will take place in front of the existing water storage tank on Main Street on Tuesday. Service disruption will begin at 10 p.m. with water restoration expected by 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality announced Tuesday afternoon. Residents throughout Glace Bay, specifically in the Phalen Road area, may notice reduced water pressure during this time.
A group in Glace Bay, N.S., says the water in a local lake is contaminated and is asking the provincial government to clean it up before stocking the pond with more trout. The No. 20 Dam Sport Fishing Association paid to have the water tested at the John Bernard Croak Memorial Park on Beacon Street in September and president Donald McNeil said the results show levels of E. coli and total coliform that exceed Health Canada guidelines.
