Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
Those taking in the views at a popular lake near Banff, Alta., will likely see a large amount of dead fish from the shore, according to Parks Canada. Fish in the second lake at Vermilion Lakes, directly west of Banff, recently died from winterkill said Mark Taylor, aquatic ecologist team lead in Banff National Park. Winterkill naturally happens when the fish don't get enough oxygen.
The Bear Street Redevelopment Project in Banff, Alberta has captured two honours at the annual Water’s Next awards, held June 2nd in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Organized by Water Canada magazine, the annual awards recognize the best people, projects, and technologies in the national water landscape. There are 14 awards given out each year, with six categories for individual leaders, six for projects and technologies, and overall awards for both. The awards are judged by a third-party panel of established industry professionals from across the country.
