Kristen Villebrun and Wendy Bush hoped they wouldn't have to pray for Chedoke Creek, but four years after they first raised alarm about the water's condition, they were part of an Indigenous full moon ceremony to do just that. About 50 people showed up near Princess Point on the dark and frigid Monday evening for the monthly ceremony, which was particularly special as it focused on Chedoke Creek. The body of water that runs into Cootes Paradise had about 24 billion litres of sewage and storm water runoff leak into it due to a gate being left open.
What was it like to win the Stockholm Junior Water Prize? I was absolutely honoured and a little bit overwhelmed. I am very honoured to be representing Canada, especially women and girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), especially in smaller communities. I am very excited as water science and water justice are huge passions of mine. So, to be able to achieve something at this level is extremely incredible.
A student from Canada has received the prestigious 2022 Stockholm Junior Water Prize for her research on how to treat and prevent harmful algae blooms. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, the official patron of the prize, announced the winner during a ceremony at World Water Week in Stockholm. World Water Week is a conference on global water issues, which started on August 23, 2022 and will go on till September 1.
